Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener are presenting SWITCH at The Joyce Theater as part of the NY Quadrille series October 2-3, and 6th.
SWITCH is part of Desire Lines, a body of interconnected works and adaptive systems for negotiating uncertainty. In nature and landscape architecture, desire lines are alternate, unofficial routes or social trails. They represent an accumulated record of disobedience and transformation in public space. We have applied this phenomenon to a dance-making process of group improvisation, a permissive space for rebellion, refusal, and participation on one’s own terms.
SWITCH focuses on the mechanics of spontaneous creation. The practice challenges individuals to navigate and name codes, contingencies, and layers of memory. It uses discursive pathways to resist culmination, and offers alternatives for patterning community.
The music for SWITCH is determined each night and are drawn from the artists’ personal collections. This page will be updated with the full music credits each evening following the performance.
